Released by Coleco for the ColecoVision in 1984, Bomb Jack is the home port of Tehkan’s arcade classic. Unlike standard platformers of the era, this title skips traditional weapons and combat, focusing instead on acrobatic aerial navigation. As a caped superhero named Jack, your singular mission across various global monuments—including the Pyramids, the Parthenon, and New York City—is to defuse a series of explosives planted by international villains before they detonate. While the ColecoVision hardware had to make graphical compromises compared to the coin-op original, this adaptation successfully captures the frantic, high-flying rhythm of the arcade source material, cementing itself as a unique entry in the console's library.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay revolves around collecting blinking dynamite sticks scattered across single-screen stages while avoiding patrolling enemies like mummies, flying saucers, and mechanical beasts. Jack’s movement is defined by his signature gliding ability; holding the jump button allows him to float slowly through the air, demanding precise trajectory calculations. To maximize your score and trigger the coveted 'Special' bonus round, you must collect the bombs in a specific numerical sequence indicated by a flashing red icon. Collecting extra items like power-ups, coins, and letters that spell 'B-O-M-B' grants extra lives or momentary invincibility, turning each screen into a high-stakes puzzle of timing and momentum.
