Description

After mankind exhausted its energy resources, and after high-energy minerals were found on the moons of Jupiter, automated Drilleroids were built and sent to these moons to mine the minerals. However, unexpected native lifeforms attacked and damaged the Drilleroids, and a team of space technicians code-named J.E.T.P.A.C. (Jupiter Elite Troop Power Afield Company) was dispatched to repair them. After the team’s spaceship was damaged beyond repair by an asteroid impact, a desperate plan was elaborated: The team needs to retrieve the power cells from the Drilleroids in order to use them as an alternate power source for their spaceship. They must therefore pilot their Jet-packs down into the dangerous tunnels of each moon and disable each Drilleroid before the power cell can be retrieved. Help them on their mission!

J.E.T.P.A.C.

Overview & History

Released in 1983 by Coleco for the ColecoVision console, *J.E.T.P.A.C.* (often stylized as Jetpac) is an influential port of Ultimate Play the Game’s seminal 1983 Sinclair ZX Spectrum classic. Programmed during the golden age of arcade-style platformers, this ColecoVision iteration tasked players with guiding a cosmic adventurer named Jetman across hostile alien worlds. While the home computer original achieved legendary status for its colorful graphics and addictive loop, the ColecoVision version pushed the hardware to deliver remarkably crisp sprites, vibrant planet surfaces, and an authentic arcade atmosphere right into family living rooms.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay revolves around a frantic three-phase cycle across hazardous extraterrestrial landscapes. In the first phase, Jetman must collect scattered components of a modular spaceship—the bottom fuel pod, the midsection, and the top cockpit—while dodging bizarre, bouncing extraterrestrial lifeforms and shooting meteorites. Once the rocket is fully assembled, phase two begins: refueling the vessel by catching falling fuel pods that drop from the upper stratosphere. Finally, phase three requires blasting off to a new planet, facing deadlier hazards and faster enemies. Jetman's primary offensive tool is his photon laser, which obliterates threatening aliens, though careful timing and positioning are paramount since contact with enemies depletes his precious lives. Collecting floating treasures grants bonus points, adding an intense score-chasing dynamic that defines early 80s arcade perfection.
