Description

“The place where wonderous treasures rub shoulders with untold nightmares.” This is how rumor and folklore describe the hellish dungeon known as the Gauntlet, a place where many have ventured into, but none have ever returned from. A group of four brave adventurers – Thor, Thyra, Merlin and Questor – found the entrance to the Gauntlet and expected to find riches inside. What they found instead were hordes of ghosts, warriors and demons emerging from the darkness from all directions. There were indeed treasures to be found however, so the group decided to push onward to see how much riches they could accumulate. But then, this is probably the fatal miscalculation made by all the other adventurers who came before them…

Gauntlet

Overview & History

Released in 1985 by U.S. Gold and ported to home systems, the ColecoVision iteration of *Gauntlet* attempted to capture the groundbreaking arcade cooperative dungeon crawler designed by Ed Logg. While the original coin-op ran on advanced hardware capable of rendering swarms of monsters simultaneously, bringing this isometric hack-and-slash experience to ColecoVision's Z80 processor was a monumental technical challenge. Rather than a direct arcade port, this version adapted the core premise—navigating labyrinthine dungeons, destroying infinite-spawn generators, and hoarding treasure—into a strictly single-player or alternating two-player endurance test. Players choose from the iconic four fantasy archetypes: Thor the Warrior, Thyra the Valkyrie, Questor the Elf, or Merlin the Wizard. Each hero boasts distinct attributes balancing speed, melee strength, and magic power, forcing players to adapt their survival strategy as health steadily ticks away against the relentless subterranean horde.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay loop revolves around obliterating 'Generator' portals that endlessly spew ghosts, grunts, demons, and lobbers. Unlike the arcade original which permitted four simultaneous players, the ColecoVision edition scales down the chaos to manage hardware limitations while preserving intense pacing. You must scavenge keys to unlock barred doors, avoid lethal poison floor tiles, and collect food to replenish dwindling health meters—crucially, shooting food accidentally destroys it. The screen scrolls dynamically as you hunt for the elusive exit stairs. Magic potions can be collected and deployed to wipe all visible enemies off the screen in a flash of light, serving as a vital panic button during overwhelming ambushes.
