Description

Venture is an action game in which you control Winky, the heroic adventurer. Your goal is to collect as many treasures as you can which are scattered throughout numerous dungeons. In each dungeon, there are several chambers which each contain a treasure. Armed only with your crossbow, you need to get past the varied creatures which guard the chamber, snag the treasure, and make it out again. When you collect the treasure from each of the chambers in a dungeon, you can then move on to the next, more difficult dungeon

Overview & History

Released by Coleco in 1982 for the ColecoVision, Venture is an arcade port originally developed by Exidy. Programmed for the home console by Coleco's internal team, this dungeon-crawling action game stood out in the early '80s library for its multi-screen exploration and synthesized voice capabilities when paired with the optional Expansion Module #3 (The Coleco Adam) or specific voice add-ons. Players assume the role of Winky, a cute, cyclopean adventurer tasked with braving treacherous rooms to loot royal treasures while avoiding deadly monsters.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game takes place over several distinct multi-level dungeons. Players guide Winky from a top-down perspective through a central hallway maze populated by wall-dwelling Goblins. Entering a side room transitions the screen into a single-screen arena where Winky must collect specific treasures—such as crowns, chalices, and rings—while evading wandering monsters. Winky’s only defense is his trusty bow and arrow, managed by Halla, a helpful elf companion who guards the treasure. Winky can shoot in four cardinal directions to destroy monsters temporarily, though they continuously respawn. If Winky takes too long to clear a room, the invincible, red spectral entity known as "Hallmonger" appears to relentlessly chase the player. Success requires careful routing, quick shooting, and strategic baiting of creatures like the bouncing snakes, floating ghosts, and blob-like creatures inhabiting the dungeon depths.
