Description

Spy Hunter is a 1983 arcade game developed and released by Bally Midway. The arcade game was ported to the ColecoVision by Coleco Industries in 1985.

The game draws inspiration from the James Bond films and was originally supposed to carry the James Bond license. The object of the game is to drive down roads in the technologically advanced “Interceptor” car and destroy various enemy vehicles with a variety of onboard weapons. Spy Hunter was produced in both sit-down and standard upright versions with the latter being more common. The game’s controls consist of a steering wheel in the form of a futuristic aircraft-style yoke with several special-purpose buttons, a two-position stick shift (offering ‘low’ and ‘high’ gears), and a pedal used for acceleration.

Released by Coleco in 1984 under official license from Bally Midway, the ColecoVision port of *Spy Hunter* brought the arcade's thrilling vehicular combat into the living room. Unlike standard racing games, this vertical-scrolling shooter casts you as a nameless government agent driving the G-615 Interceptor. Your mission is to eliminate civilian-harming enemy mobsters, international assassins, and rival road thugs across a perpetually shifting landscape featuring dry land, icy patches, and wide rivers.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game presents a top-down, vertically scrolling perspective. Players constantly accelerate forward while managing a dense arsenal. Your base vehicle is armed with dual front-mounted machine guns with unlimited ammo, though holding the fire button too long risks overheating. Crucial to survival are the specialized weapons trucks—marked with the letter 'W'—that periodically appear. Entering their rear hatch upgrades your weaponry: oil slicks to send tailgating cars spinning, smoke screens to blind pursuers, and surface-to-air missiles to blast aerial threats. When you encounter deep water, your Interceptor automatically transforms into a high-speed hydro-boat. Conversely, crashing too many times destroys your car, forcing you to eject as a vulnerable civilian runner until you reach a spare vehicle shelter. The game employs a continuous scoring system with no traditional "levels," progressively ramping up enemy aggression, speed, and hazard frequency until you run out of lives.
