Description
Frenzy is the sequel to Berzerk and gameplay is similar. You are chased around a maze of rooms by various robots and your player must avoid their lasers and shoot them back to destroy them. There’s only so much time the player can stay in a room before a “Robot Attacks” occurs and a smiley face of death moves in on the player. In Frenzy there are also reflective mirrors in place of certain walls which reflects shots back and allow you to ricochet your fire. Also unique to Frenzy are four “device rooms” with a special icon in the center of the room that may be destroyed for bonus points and a special effect within that room.
Frenzy
Overview & History: Released in 1983 for the ColecoVision, Frenzy is the official home port of Stern Electronics’ 1982 arcade sequel to the legendary hit, Berzerk. Published by Coleco, this version is widely celebrated as one of the console's most technically impressive arcade translations, offering near-perfect graphics and highly responsive controls. The game’s premise thrusts players into a hostile, metallic maze-complex on an alien planet. You control a lone humanoid mercenary tasked with surviving endless chambers populated by deadly robotic guards, all while escaping the clutches of the terrifying, bouncing smiley face, Evil Otto.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
While it retains the fast-paced, screen-clearing shooting of its predecessor, Frenzy introduces deep tactical mechanics that set it apart. The game features interactive maze walls: some are destructible dot-matrix barriers that can be shot away to carve out custom escape paths, while others are reflective, causing laser beams to ricochet wildly across the screen. Players face two distinct enemy types: armed humanoid skeletons and tank-like Octons. The protagonist can move and shoot in eight directions, requiring precise positioning to avoid incoming fire. A key gameplay twist lies in the behavior of Evil Otto; unlike the original game where he was invincible, players in Frenzy can shoot Otto to temporarily destroy him, though he quickly regenerates in a much faster, enraged state. Points are awarded for destroying robots and surviving consecutive rooms, with the difficulty scaling rapidly as the metallic hordes grow swifter and more accurate.
