Nova Blast

Overview & History

Developed and published by Sunrise Software in 1983 exclusively for the ColecoVision, Nova Blast is a hidden gem of the golden era of arcade-style shooters. Amidst a crowded market of space-themed combat titles, this release sought to push the ColecoVision's hardware limits by delivering relentless, high-speed vertical scrolling action combined with intricate planetary defense objectives. Players assume the role of Commander Vance, piloting the experimental Star-Stryker fighter craft deep into the treacherous Andromeda Sector. The mission is critical: neutralize the rogue bio-mechanical armada known as the Nova Swarm before they detonate a series of antimatter cores, which threatens to annihilate the entire Orion Federation. While it never achieved the widespread household name status of Coleco's official arcade ports, Nova Blast carved out a dedicated following among retro enthusiasts for its punishing difficulty curve, vibrant color palette, and atmospheric Chiptune soundtrack that heightened the tension of deep-space combat.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Nova Blast splits its high-octane gameplay into two distinct phases. In the primary phase, players navigate a vertical scrolling starfield, dodging dense asteroid fields and swarms of enemy interceptors while collecting energy crystals to upgrade weapon systems. The secondary phase shifts perspective as the Star-Stryker docks with hostile dreadnoughts, requiring precision shooting to dismantle central reactor cores under tight time limits. Character and ship abilities include a standard rapid-fire plasma cannon, a limited-use smart bomb that clears all on-screen projectiles, and a temporary thruster boost that grants invulnerability during high-speed evasive maneuvers. Strategic management of weapon heat levels is vital, as sustained firing causes the primary cannon to overheat, leaving the ship temporarily defenseless against incoming kamikaze drones.
