Description

Pepper II is a maze game with zip! The object of Pepper II is simple enough, all you do is zip closed sections of the maze and they will become filled with color. Zip in all the sections of the maze and it’s complete. However if you back track you might unzip your path, so be careful! Each stage has four mazes you must complete to move on, but you can move from maze to maze by using the exits located at the top, bottom and sides of the screen. And don’t forget about the bad guys trying to take you out all the while. If one touches you you’re toast! You can fight back by zipping sections of the maze closed that contain power-ups that will make you invincible for a short time or clear all the screen of the baddies. The game keeps getting harder as you progress to higher stages.

Pepper II

Overview & History

Released by Exidy in arcades and brilliantly ported to the ColecoVision by Coleco in 1983, Pepper II is a quirky, fast-paced maze game that serves as a spiritual successor to 1980’s Pepper II (though radically altering the formula). As the title character Zippy—a diminutive, cape-wearing superhero—your quest revolves around piecing together stolen jigsaw puzzle pieces of the Zippy family portrait, which have been scattered across multiple interconnected mazes guarded by eccentric adversaries like Zot and Zipper.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard dot-munchers, Pepper II introduces an innovative "zipper" mechanic. Players must navigate empty grid lines and press the action button to zip (draw) closed sections of the maze. Enclosing an area not only traps or destroys roaming enemies caught inside, but it also reveals hidden bonus items, keys, and crucial puzzle pieces. The game features four distinct mazes—representing a house, a garage, a backyard, and a furnace—each requiring players to collect specific keys to unlock warp gates leading to the next stage. Adding to the frantic tension, players can collect a "Flame" power-up to temporarily turn the tables, allowing Zippy to chase and incinerate his tormentors, accompanied by a frantic, driving chiptune soundtrack.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move Zippy through the maze corridors
  • Action Keys: Activate the zipper mechanic to close/draw maze sections
  • Enter: Start / Pause the game
