Description

SubRoc is a first-person arcade game released in 1982 by Sega, and the first commercial game to provide a stereoscopic image to the player, using a display that delivers individual images to each eye. The game has stereo sound, and also changes the backdrop to reflect day, night, dawn, and dusk.

It was adapted for ColecoVision, as SubRoc, with simulated 3D effects, by Arnold Hendrick and Philip Taterczynski of the Coleco game design staff, with programming by David Wesely of 4D Interactive Systems.

SubRoc

Overview & History

Released in 1983 by Coleco for the ColecoVision console, SubRoc (often styled as SubRoc-3D) was an ambitious port of Sega's original 1982 arcade shooter. Developed during a time when home systems aggressively chased arcade-quality experiences, Coleco’s adaptation brought the frantic, multi-layered sci-fi warfare into living rooms. The game's storyline plunges the player into a futuristic war against an alien armada known as the Xain, who have launched an invasion from beneath the ocean. Operating a high-tech combat vehicle capable of navigating both surface waters and deep-sea trenches, the player's mission is to repel the amphibious assault across escalating stages of mechanical terror.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

SubRoc stands out for its unique pseudo-3D perspective and shifting gameplay mechanics that transition from aerial dogfights to submerged submarine combat. The game is divided into distinct stages: players begin by piloting a jet over the ocean surface, dodging and shooting enemy aircraft. As the mission progresses, the vehicle plunges underwater into submarine territory, where the gameplay shifts to a downward-scrolling shooter against aquatic biomechanical monstrosities, including giant manta rays, laser-firing squids, and fortified undersea bases. Controls require split-second timing as players must manage vertical movement, avoid obstacles, and deploy limited smart-bombs to clear the screen of overwhelming enemy fire. The ColecoVision port captured the relentless difficulty and frantic pacing of the arcade original, utilizing the console's robust graphical capabilities to render distinct scaling effects that simulated depth long before true 3D polygons became the industry standard.
