Description

Time Pilot is an arcade style shooter. Piloting your trusty spaceship, you need to destroy the squadrons of enemy craft that are attacking! On each level you have a quota of enemies that need to be destroyed. After fulfilling your quota, a final boss of the level will appear; when destroyed, you will move on to the next level. The game begins in the year 1910, and each time a level is completed you advance in time. In 1910 you only have to face relatively unarmed biplanes, but as the levels advance so does the technology. Each new level brings with it tougher, more heavily armed aircraft including jets, helicopters, and even flying saucers! From time to time, you will encounter a parachute; if you run into this, you will earn bonus points.

Time Pilot

Overview & History

Released by Coleco in 1983, Time Pilot for the ColecoVision successfully translates Konami’s arcade multi-directional shooter into the living room. Designed by Akira Sato, the game departs from static space shooters by casting you as a futuristic pilot trapped in a temporal rift. Your mission spans six distinct historical and futuristic eras—ranging from 1910 biplanes to 2001 futuristic UFOs—to rescue stranded fellow pilots scattered across the timeline. Though constrained by the hardware limitations of the era, the ColecoVision port captures the frantic, dizzying pacing of the arcade original, making it a standout technical achievement for home consoles of the early '80s.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard side-scrollers, Time Pilot features a continuous 360-degree scrolling playfield where your fighter jet remains permanently centered on the screen while the background and enemy formations orbit around you. The core gameplay loop requires you to destroy a specific quota of enemy craft within each era before a menacing boss ship warps in. Defeating the boss unlocks the vortex portal, automatically propelling you into the next historical epoch. Enemy variety scales dramatically: you start by dodging slow-moving biplanes and hot-air balloons in 1910, progress through World War II monoplanes, Korean War jets, futuristic 1984 choppers, and finally 2001 space combat against advanced alien dreadnoughts.
