Description

Pac-Man is an action maze chase video game; the player controls the eponymous character through an enclosed maze. The objective of the game is to eat all of the dots placed in the maze while avoiding four colored ghosts — Blinky (red), Pinky (pink), Inky (cyan), and Clyde (orange) — that pursue him. When Pac-Man eats all of the dots, the player advances to the next level. If Pac-Man makes contact with a ghost, he will lose a life; the game ends when all lives are lost.

It was not released on the ColecoVision, only a prototype from 1983 exists. This port of Pac-Man was actually completed, and had many of the aspects of Namco’s original Pac-Man. It is superior to most other ports by Atarisoft.

Pac-Man

Overview & History

Released by Coleco in 1983, the ColecoVision port of Namco’s iconic arcade classic arrived during a fiercely competitive era of home console wars. While Atari owned the dominant 2600 version, Coleco secured exclusive licensing rights to bundle *Pac-Man* with their powerful third-generation hardware, using the game as a primary system-seller to demonstrate the console's near-arcade-quality graphics. Unlike its pixelated contemporaries, this home iteration was meticulously engineered to capture the vibrant aesthetic and frantic pacing of the coin-op original, bridging the gap between arcade halls and family living rooms.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players assume the role of the titular yellow, circular hero navigating a single-screen maze, consuming every yellow dot while dodging four distinct, color-coded ghosts: Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde. Each ghost operates with unique artificial intelligence routines—Blinky relentlessly pursues the player, while others employ ambush tactics. Swallowing one of the four flashing Power Pellets temporarily reverses the dynamic, turning the relentless stalkers into vulnerable, indigo-hued prey that grant bonus points when eaten. Intermediate fruit items periodically appear in the center of the maze for high-scoring bonuses. The ColecoVision port faithfully replicates the classic maze layout, scoring system, and intermission animations, delivering a remarkably authentic arcade translation limited only by its unique joystick hardware constraints.
